Chrystia Freeland is officially running for the Liberal leadership, aiming to fight for Canada and gather support from fellow party members.
Her official campaign kick-off is set for Sunday, but she hasn’t shared any details yet. This news comes right after Mark Carney announced his own leadership bid in Edmonton.
Freeland has already got some backing from cabinet ministers. Health Minister Mark Holland and Fisheries Minister Diane Lebouthillier are among her supporters. But many ministers are still keeping quiet about their choices.
A bunch of other politicians are also on her side, including Rob Oliphant and James Maloney from Ontario, and a few from Quebec and the Atlantic provinces. Michael Coteau, the Ontario Liberal caucus chair, expressed his pride in supporting her.
He praised her dedication and ability to tackle tough issues. Allan Rock, a former cabinet minister, also backed her, highlighting her competence and character throughout her career.
Freeland has been vocal about her stance on trade, especially regarding President Trump’s threats of tariffs. She’s made it clear that Canada won’t back down if pushed.
On another note, Jonathan Wilkinson, who was considering a run himself, decided not to enter the race. He feels his current role is too important to leave right now, especially with the challenges ahead.
