The Canadian government is investing $50 million in a major rental project in Montreal, aiming to boost affordable housing and community development.
Montreal: The Canadian government just announced a big investment of nearly $50 million for a new rental project called MileBrook. This project is set to be the largest mixed-use residential development in the area, with 144 rental units planned to kick things off.
Located at the eastern end of the Island of Montreal, MileBrook will eventually have over 800 rental units. It’s a $340 million project that’s really going to change the neighborhood.
Caroline Bourgeois, the Mayor of Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles, shared how important this development is for the community. She mentioned that it will not only provide new homes but also bring in much-needed businesses.
What’s cool is that the project is designed with the environment in mind. They’re including green spaces, roofs, and even a community garden to make the area more livable.
The Routhier Monette Family, who have been working on this project for four years, expressed their excitement. They’ve had a vision for this land for decades, aiming to create a safe place for families.
They’re also focusing on being environmentally responsible by protecting wetlands and aiming for LEED Platinum certification. The units will be 25% more energy-efficient than what’s required by the building code.
Minister Nathaniel Erskine-Smith emphasized that this investment is part of a larger effort to tackle Canada’s housing crisis. He believes it’s crucial for families in Quebec to have access to safe and affordable homes.
Additionally, the MileBrook project is committed to supporting local families and businesses, especially vulnerable communities. They’ve teamed up with the Fondation Louis-Charles Routhier to provide affordable housing for low-income single mothers.
Valérie Larouche from Mères avec pouvoir explained how this collaboration will help many families find homes, which is a fantastic initiative.
The funding comes from the Apartment Construction Loan Program, which aims to stimulate rental housing construction across Canada. Minister Soraya Martinez Ferrada highlighted that rental housing is key to building healthy communities and supporting local economies.
