Guzzo cinemas in Montreal and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu are closing due to financial struggles, impacting moviegoers and employees alike
Montreal: It’s a bummer for movie lovers! Guzzo cinemas are shutting down in the Marché Central area and in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.
The family-run chain made the tough call to close these spots, saying it was necessary to keep the business afloat.
They didn’t go into too much detail, but they mentioned that the pandemic really hit their finances hard.
Despite everyone’s best efforts, the company felt it had to make some tough choices. They also shared that some jobs will be lost, which is always sad.
Just six years back, Guzzo was planning to expand into cities like Vancouver and Calgary. Now, they’re down to just seven locations after these closures.
Last November, they had to close another cinema in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, and they’ve been trying to restructure since then.
They owe over $60 million to creditors, including CIBC and the government, which adds to the pressure.
