Montreal: The Supreme Court is set to hear a challenge against Quebec’s Bill 21, which has stirred up quite a debate. Mark Carney and Chrystia Freeland, both eyeing the Liberal leadership, are urging the prime minister to step in.

They believe Ottawa has a responsibility to protect the rights of all Canadians as outlined in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Marie Pascale Desrosiers, Carney’s campaign deputy, emphasized this point, saying it’s crucial to act when rights are at risk.

Freeland’s team echoed this sentiment, stating that human rights are central to her campaign. Bill 21, which restricts certain public workers from wearing religious symbols, has sparked significant support in Quebec but also criticism from various religious groups.

Justice Minister Arif Virani confirmed that the federal government plans to intervene in the case. He mentioned that when national issues arise, the government will defend the Charter, which they helped establish over 40 years ago.

While the law has mostly been upheld in lower courts, the Supreme Court’s decision to hear the challenge raises questions about the future of the legislation. With Trudeau expected to step down soon, the commitment to intervene may shift depending on the new leader’s stance.

Karina Gould, another leadership contender, stated that the federal government must defend Canadians’ rights, while Frank Baylis, a former MP, has been vocal against Bill 21, actively supporting those affected by it.

As the political landscape evolves, many are looking to see how leaders will respond to the Supreme Court’s decision and the ongoing implications of Bill 21.
