Montreal: The city is shaking things up with its short-term rental rules. Mayor Valérie Plante thinks the current regulations just aren’t cutting it. So, they’re allowing Airbnb rentals from June 10 to September 10 at primary residences.

For the rest of the year, though, it’s a different story. Rentals will only be allowed in specific zones. Plante pointed out that the existing rules have overwhelmed inspectors, making it tough for them to keep track of everything.

She mentioned that the current model doesn’t fit Montreal’s reality. By limiting rentals to a specific time, it should make life easier for inspectors. They won’t have to deal with huge files to prove violations anymore.

The city has been struggling to enforce the rules, and it turns out that over half of the 4,000 short-term rental units are illegal. With the new plan, inspectors can slap $1,000 fines directly on offenders, plus an extra $2,000 for each day they keep breaking the rules. Sounds like a big change is on the way!
