Steven Zhang brings Chinese culture to life through his amazing snow sculptures in Montreal
Kirkland: What started as a fun hobby for Steven Zhang has turned into a yearly tradition. He’s been crafting beautiful snow sculptures in Montreal’s West Island since 2020.
Zhang, who moved from Beijing in late 2019, loves sharing his Chinese culture with his neighbors. “I want to show Chinese culture to my neighbors,” he says with pride.
His background is in Chinese paintings and calligraphy, so it makes sense that he’d want to express his heritage through art, even in the freezing cold.
Every winter, he gets to work on his snow sculptures, and the community really appreciates them. “I’ve done this in colder weather,” he laughs, recalling past winters.
This year, he’s inspired by the zodiac, creating a dragon baby for the Year of the Snake. “We call snakes little dragons,” he explains, excited about his creation.
His neighbors look forward to his sculptures each winter, and that keeps him motivated. “So I do it every year,” he says, clearly enjoying the process.
He’s also contributed to the Kirkland winter festival, but this year he’s facing a challenge. “We have not enough snow,” he admits, hoping for more to come.
“Everything depends on the snow,” he adds, looking forward to what he can create if the weather cooperates.
