Toronto: A new poll shows that 43% of young Canadians might vote to join the U.S. if they got some guarantees. It’s a surprising thought, right?

Darrell Bricker from Ipsos shared that young men in Canada feel uncertain about the country’s direction. They’re curious about opportunities in the U.S.

He mentioned that if they could convert their Canadian dollars to U.S. dollars and secure citizenship, many would consider it. That’s pretty wild!

Interestingly, Donald Trump has called Canada “the 51st state” on social media. This hasn’t sat well with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other politicians.

In the poll, about 40% of Canadians aged 18 to 34 would choose to be American if those conditions were met. But that number drops to 30% for older age groups.

Bricker noted that Canadians are generally patriotic. Around 80% would stick with Canada if given a choice between the two.

Almost half of Canadians think Trump’s comments could threaten Canada’s independence. Yet, 43% believe they shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

Younger folks seem to feel more anxious about the country’s future. They think Trump’s threats are more real than others do.

Most people agree that Canada should stay independent. However, 20% would consider their province becoming American, but only if Alberta and Quebec were independent first.

Some believe Canada merging with the U.S. is inevitable. About 20% think it’s just a matter of time, while 80% disagree.

Interestingly, 27% think Alberta or Quebec might separate from Canada in the next decade. That’s a bold prediction!

Bricker pointed out that while 80% of Canadians wouldn’t vote to join the U.S., that number jumps to 30% if full citizenship and currency conversion are on the table.

These insights come from an Ipsos poll conducted in January 2025, involving 1,000 Canadians aged 18 and older. It’s fascinating to see how opinions vary!
