Montreal: A 20-year-old man named Muhammad Shahzeb Khan is in a bit of a pickle. He was arrested in Quebec for allegedly planning a mass shooting at a Jewish center in New York City. This was supposedly on behalf of the Islamic State.

Khan has been behind bars since September 4. He’s facing extradition to the U.S. for trial. U.S. officials have charged him with trying to support a terrorist organization. His next hearing is set for February 20.

During a recent court appearance, Khan looked pretty serious in his black winter jacket and handcuffs. He didn’t say much but did chat briefly with his lawyer. Authorities say he was planning this attack to mark the anniversary of a significant event involving Hamas.

Before his arrest, Khan lived in Mississauga, Ontario. He came to Canada on a student visa just a few months earlier. The FBI got wind of him after an informant noticed his pro-ISIS posts on social media.

Khan was chatting online about his plans and even sent videos related to the Islamic State. He thought he was being careful, but the FBI was keeping tabs on him. They eventually linked him to a group chat discussing attacks in various countries.

In July, he started talking about forming a group of supporters to carry out an attack. He even mentioned using AR-style rifles. After some arrests related to another plot, he told his group to stay low-key and avoid social media.

Despite the arrests, Khan kept pushing his plans. He was ready to head to New York City, which he saw as a prime target. He was caught on September 4 while switching cars on his way there. His lawyer claims the case is a setup, but extradition cases can be tough to fight.
