A paramedic helped a homeless man after an attack. She didn’t know he was stabbed at first. Jennifer Ellis testified at a trial. Two teen girls pleaded not guilty to murder. The victim was Kenneth Lee.

Ellis said Lee looked hit in the face. This happened in a park just after midnight on December 18, 2022. Lee was 59 years old. He was alert and spoke clearly.

They checked Lee’s back for injuries, but found nothing before putting him on a stretcher. Lee said he needed the bathroom. He collapsed soon after.

Her partner saw stab wounds in the ambulance. Lee became less aware on the way to St. Michael’s Hospital. Lee died during surgery. He had been beaten and stabbed.

Police arrested eight girls after Lee’s death. They were between 13 and 16 years old. The current trial involves girls who were 14 and 16. Prosecutors say the younger girl delivered the fatal blow.

The Crown hasn’t specified when Lee was stabbed or with what. The younger girl held a sharp object. Video shows the group attack Lee; they kicked, punched, and hit him with a cone.

Three girls pleaded guilty to manslaughter last year, and one pleaded guilty to assault charges. A jury trial is scheduled for two other girls in May. They are charged with murder and manslaughter.
