A paramedic is giving testimony in court now. She responded to an incident in Toronto involving a homeless man. She said she didn’t know he was stabbed at first.

The trial involves two teenage girls. They pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder. Kenneth Lee died in the incident.

Jennifer Ellis said Lee seemed hit in the face when she arrived at the park. The incident occurred just past midnight on December 18, 2022. Lee, aged 59, was awake and talking with her.

They looked at Lee’s back for injuries before they tried to get him on the stretcher. They didn’t see any injuries then. Lee said that he had to go to the bathroom. He stepped away for that reason, then, moments later, he suddenly collapsed.

Her partner could examine him closely inside. He noticed two penetrating injuries there and they thought these were stab wounds. Lee became less aware quickly while getting him to the hospital. St. Michael’s Hospital was where they took him.

The court heard Lee died during surgery. Before this, someone beat and stabbed him. Police arrested eight girls later, their ages ranging between thirteen and sixteen, shortly after the death.

The girls on trial were fourteen and sixteen at the time of the event. The prosecution says the youngest girl delivered the fatal blow. The Crown hasn’t specified when exactly Lee was stabbed. Moreover, they haven’t mentioned the weapon she used, but they say the girl held something sharp.

The court watched surveillance video showing a group attack on Lee soon after they saw him. Some kicked, punched, and swung a traffic cone.

Three girls pleaded guilty last year. They admitted to manslaughter charges, while another pleaded to assault charges. One involved bodily harm and a weapon. Two other girls face a jury trial in May on second-degree murder and manslaughter charges.
