Trudeau and provincial leaders discuss U.S. tariffs and trade relations in a virtual meeting
The meeting is set for 11 a.m. and will focus on how Canada can handle its relationship with the U.S. Last week, Trudeau had everyone in Ottawa to prep for the tariffs Trump has been threatening.
After that in-person meeting, the premiers agreed to stick together and defend Canadian interests against those potential tariffs. But not everyone was on board. Alberta’s Premier Danielle Smith didn’t sign the statement, saying her province is against any tariffs on energy exports.
Trump has been pretty vocal about wanting to impose hefty tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods. He even hinted that he might do it soon. While he didn’t follow through right away, he’s still got it on his mind.
Trudeau, meanwhile, is ready to respond if needed. He’s all about matching those tariffs dollar for dollar. Quebec Premier François Legault reassured folks in his province that they’ll be protected no matter what Trump decides. It’s all about sticking together through this.
