Montreal: A polar vortex is bringing some serious chill to the city. This Arctic air is expected to stick around until Wednesday. It’s going to be the coldest we’ve felt in two years.

Gina Ressler, a meteorologist, mentioned that temperatures in central Quebec hit a staggering minus 47 degrees Celsius this morning. And that’s without factoring in the wind chill!

Believe it or not, these are the coldest temps in all of North America right now. Quebec is even colder than the Arctic! Cold snaps like this are pretty typical for January and February, but last winter was a bit of an outlier.

Last year, we barely saw temperatures drop below minus 20 degrees. This week, though, Montreal hit minus 14 degrees, but it felt more like minus 24 with the wind chill.

The cold is expected to linger below minus 20 degrees until Wednesday. Usually, we’d see daytime highs around minus six degrees this time of year.

Ressler noted that this week’s cold air is the most extreme we’ve had this season. While Montreal won’t experience the worst of it compared to other parts of Quebec, it’s still a noteworthy chill for us.
