Quebec: So, it looks like Quebec has decided to hit the brakes on funding for support programs aimed at immigrant and Aboriginal students. This news came straight from The Canadian Press.

The Ministry of Education confirmed that they’ve put a hold on measures designed to help these students succeed. This includes about 15 different initiatives that were supposed to promote integration and educational success.

Some of the projects that are now on pause were meant to help students connect with Quebec culture. Nicolas Prévost, the president of the FQDE, expressed his disappointment, saying schools had plans for trips and activities that are now canceled.

In Laval, for instance, they used to organize trips to places like Quebec City and the National Assembly. It was a great way to welcome new students and help them feel part of the community.

Prévost also pointed out that the cuts to support for Aboriginal students will hit areas like Abitibi and Côte-Nord hard. These programs were crucial for activities that brought communities together.

On the bright side, a ministry spokesperson assured that any funding approved before December 13, 2024, will still be honored. But everything else is on hold for now.

Interestingly, a professor from UQTR, Corina Borri-Anadon, found it surprising that these important measures were paused. She emphasized that these issues are critical for the future of our society.

Last November, the Quebec Auditor General highlighted the lack of support for Aboriginal students, noting that they often struggle when transitioning to the broader Quebec school system.

With the government facing a hefty $11 billion deficit, they’ve asked the education sector to tighten its budget by $200 million. Some schools are already cutting back on food aid and cultural outings.

Premier François Legault recently claimed that education budgets are still increasing, but many find that hard to believe given the cuts being made. Prévost summed it up well, saying it’s frustrating to take steps forward only to be pushed back.
