Teachers in Quebec are advocating for a shift to two report cards each year, aiming for this change by next school year.
Quebec: A lot of teachers are really hoping to cut down the number of report cards to just two a year instead of three. They want this change to happen as soon as next school year.
According to a survey from the Fédération des syndicats de l’enseignement (FSE), a whopping 89% of teachers are on board with going back to two report cards, like during the pandemic years.
This survey was done last November and December, and it got responses from about 9,600 teachers out of 95,000 FSE members. That’s around 10% of the union’s members and 6% of all public school teachers in Quebec.
Many teachers feel that the current system is too complicated and actually hurts student learning. In fact, 66% of them think it adds unnecessary stress and paperwork.
This feeling is even stronger among elementary school teachers, with 82% agreeing that the current system isn’t working well for their students.
Just so you know, the three-report-card system has been around since 2011. Before that, students used to get four report cards each year.
CityNews tried to get in touch with the Centrale des syndicats du Québec (CSQ) for their take, but they haven’t responded yet.
