English CEGEPs in Quebec are facing confusion and burnout due to new language law changes
Quebec: The new language law is causing quite a stir at English CEGEPs. Staff are feeling overwhelmed, and students are confused. It’s a tough situation.
Law 14, which used to be called Bill 96, kicked in this school year. Now, students must take five French courses to graduate. For English speakers, that’s three more than before.
On top of that, English CEGEPs are dealing with a hiring freeze. So, the workload is piling up, and it’s not easy for the staff to manage.
Éric Cyr, the union president, pointed out that everyone is struggling. The extra demands from the new law are really taking a toll on the staff.
He mentioned that many teachers are feeling burnt out and need support. It’s a lot to handle, and they’re not getting any extra help.
Students are feeling the pressure too. The added French classes are discouraging some, making it harder for them to graduate on time.
Cyr believes that students who were already enrolled before the law should be allowed to finish their studies without the extra hassle. A temporary grandfather clause could really help keep their motivation up.
