Quebec: The SAQ is making some changes to its branch locations. They’re adjusting the hours for 251 stores and closing a few that aren’t getting enough foot traffic.

But don’t worry, they’re also opening a new spot in Sherbrooke to keep up with demand in growing areas.

Linda Bouchard from SAQ mentioned that these changes are just smart management moves, not a sign of cutting back on services.

Starting in April, you’ll see these new hours in action. They’re shutting down the Rivière-Bleue and downtown Chicoutimi branches because fewer people are visiting them.

There’s also a location in Brossard that’s merging with another nearby store since they share the same customers. Good news is, no jobs will be lost in this shuffle.

Every year, they check how each store is doing to make sure they’re meeting customer needs. Bouchard pointed out that they’ve noticed a demand for a new branch in Sherbrooke, so they’re on it.

In their latest report, SAQ saw a tiny bump in net income, but in-store sales dropped a bit. It seems like folks are changing how they drink.

Pascal Thériault from McGill University said if stores can’t cover their costs, tough choices have to be made. People are drinking less, which might be part of a healthier lifestyle trend.

He believes that while people are cutting back, they might be opting for better quality drinks when they do indulge. So, it’s all about quality over quantity now.

Research shows younger people in Quebec are drinking less than before, which is a positive shift.

Jacinthe Brisson from the public health institute noted that binge drinking is on the decline among the youth.

However, while SAQ insists no jobs are at risk, Élise Lallement from the employees’ union pointed out that these changes can still impact workers. They’ll have to adjust to new travel times and hours, which can be tough.

She feels these decisions often overlook the staff’s needs, and it’s not the best way to handle things.
