Union members at Sépaq are considering a strike mandate as negotiations stall over wages and job classifications
Quebec: So, there’s some buzz about the unionized workers at Sépaq. About 2,500 of them are thinking about adopting a mandate for an unlimited strike. It’s a big deal!
These folks are part of the Syndicat de la fonction publique et parapublique du Québec, which is a pretty large union. They work in all sorts of places like national parks, wildlife reserves, and even the Aquarium of Quebec.
They’re planning to hold meetings in February and March to vote on this mandate. Christian Daigle, the union’s president, mentioned that their current contract expired at the end of last year.
Negotiations have been dragging on for months. They’re still waiting for a wage offer, which is a bit frustrating. There’s also some work on job classifications that’s holding things up.
Daigle pointed out that the wage offer is crucial for moving forward. It’s really the key to everything right now.
If they get the mandate, they might start applying pressure tactics right at the beginning of the season. They’re looking at the start of fishing in wildlife reserves and parks, plus tourist spots and campgrounds.
