Westmount’s Mayor Christina Smith has decided not to run again this November after 12 impactful years on the council
She shared her decision on the city’s website, mentioning that it came after some deep talks with her family. Smith expressed how fulfilling it’s been to impact residents’ lives directly.
She’ll stay on as mayor until the election, which is set for November. Smith noted there’s still a lot to do, but she’s grateful for the dedicated council she’s worked with.
Reflecting on her time, she highlighted how the community came together during the pandemic. Juggling homeschooling and caring for her parents while being mayor was tough, but they managed to support those in need.
Smith emphasized the community’s spirit during those challenging times. Looking ahead, she mentioned the next administration will need to focus on Hydro Westmount and the southeast sector’s redevelopment.
She also pointed out the importance of finding new funding to maintain the aging infrastructure and tackle the housing crisis. Smith first became mayor in 2017 and has served a total of 12 years on the council.
In her farewell message, she reassured citizens that they’ll have a dedicated council to represent them in the future.
