A youth involved in the 2022 murder of a Montreal teen has been sentenced to over four years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter.
Philippe was only 17 when he and another teen were charged with second-degree murder. The whole thing went down on January 13, 2022, during a fight between two groups of teens. Amir was shot in the chest near Rivard and Roy streets.
His lawyer mentioned that the conflict had been brewing for almost four years, but it wasn’t really about Philippe or Amir. It was more about issues between their friends. Both teens ended up pleading guilty to manslaughter last October.
Now that Philippe agreed to an adult sentence, he can be named. His lawyer was hoping for a four-year sentence, while the Crown wanted six. In the end, they settled on just over four years.
Philippe has shown some remorse and has been working on his rehabilitation. After the sentencing, the Crown prosecutor said this case sends a strong message about the consequences of using firearms, even for minors. It’s a tough situation all around, and it really highlights the serious issues with gun access among young people.
